Strong Finish in District 4 Congressional Race With 36% Primary Vote

In a first-time run for political office, I finished a strong second place against GOP incumbent for U.S. Congressional District 4, Tom McClintock. Starting as a virtual unknown, I received 49,473 votes, or approximately 36% of the total. I will face McClintock in the general election on Tuesday, November 6.

With a handful of committed volunteers and very little funding, our campaign took on an incumbent career politician with statewide name recognition and pulled more than 35% of the vote,” Uppal said. “We believe that proves that many voters of District 4 would welcome an alternative to the self-serving actions and ineffective leadership Tom McClintock represents. Now we just need to let the rest of them know they have a choice.

The Real Job Creators

I saw an interesting comment on an internet story about who the real job creators are in this country - it’s the middle class. That commentator is totally correct. We have had some of the lowest tax rates on businesses and individuals over the past 12 years, and yet job creation has been meager. Only a vibrant and confident middle class in America is capable of creating the demand which will lead to true job creation. If we look at the income of middle class families over the past 30 years, it’s been flat, and the downturn over the past 4 years has been devastating. So, if we want real job creation, let’s stimulate the real job creators - the middle class.

The Partisan Divide - A Call for Moderation

Picture our nation as being on a raft careening towards a giant waterfall.  Our politicians have the oars, but some are steering our raft towards the right bank and some towards the left bank.  As a result, we are still heading towards the abyss.  Working together, we’ve got more than enough power to steer us upstream and move our country away from peril. But our Representatives see blaming others and refusing to work together as more important than steering our nation away from the certain catastrophe that lies ahead. We must elect moderate candidates who will do what is right to get our country back on course.

Great decisions in our nation have often come out of great, impassioned debates, but many of our representatives are still stuck debating ideology. They place their sacred dogma ahead of country by refusing to come together.  Richard Mourdock, who defeated Senator Richard Lugar in the Indiana GOP primary, has argued for even more partisanship, saying, “…if there's going to be bipartisanship, it's going to be the Democrats coming our way.” This divide exists on both sides of the political spectrum, with many Democratic and Republican Representatives unwilling to address their sacred issues.

Meanwhile, our economy is in the worst downturn in over half a century, our unemployment rate is still unacceptably high, our national debt is at an all-time high and climbing, and student loans are set to sharply increase interest rates unless Congress acts.

Meanwhile, who suffers? Our children that rely on these loans suffer. Our Seniors who depend on Congress to make sure Medicare and Social Security is secure, and business big and small who need to plan for their future. We need Congress to act on the transportation bill, jobs bills, and the federal budget.  Yet nothing is getting done.

Nothing will get done unless we cleanse the toxic partisanship in Congress by removing staunch ideologues and electing more moderate candidates.  It will take moderates to put country over politics, and move our economy forward.  Overwhelmingly, we prefer to our representative to work with both parties, as opposed to being an ideologue that accomplishes nothing.  At a time when moderates like Olympia Snow are leaving Congress in disgust over the poisonous partisan environment, we must ensure more moderates are elected to Congress if we are to get anything accomplished over the next two years.

Senator Lugar, in his farewell message, said, “Bipartisanship is not the opposite of principle.”  As a candidate for Congress, I have my principles too.  My principles are for the prosperity and well being of all the American people, for economic, technological, and military strength in America, and for equal opportunities for all Americans to better their lives. To the extent that these principles are shared by Republicans and Democrats, I will be able to work with them. Those that have their hands tied by an assortment of pledges and party purity can not move our country forward. For the sake of our nation, I implore you to ask your friends across this nation to elect moderates into our Congress, and for you to elect me, Jack Uppal, to Congress representing California’s 4th district.

Red White and Blue Chili

We had great time participating in the 2012 El Dorado County 4-H Club’s Chili Cook-Off on May 5th.  It was wonderful meeting so many people in Placerville. Although we did not win, our chili got great accolades, and we promised we'd post the recipe on our website. Here is my own recipe that we used to make about 3 gallons of chili:

Red, White, and Blue Chili
3 Tbsp vegetable oil
3 lbs finely cut-up beef chuck roast (not ground - but close)
1-1/2 lbs sweet Italian sausage meat (no casings)
3 large onions chopped
3 green peppers chopped
1 head of celery chopped
5 Tbsp oregano
3 Tbsp Hot chili powder
2 Tbsp mild chili powder
3 Tbsp Cumin powder
salt and pepper to taste
1 28 oz can of diced tomatoes
4 fresh tomatoes diced
2 cans red kidney beans
1 can white kidney beans (optional, or use additional can of red kidney beans)
Blue tortilla chips (optional)
Cut up cheddar cheese (optional)

1. Heat up a large kettle and add the oil.  Get the oil very hot until it is just starting to smoke.
2. Add the beef and sausage, stirring and scraping.  This should create a lot of smoke, so cover the kettle to let that smoky flavor get into the meat and the meat is browned.
3. Drain most of the fat out of the kettle. Next add the onions, green peppers, celery, and spices. Cook, stirring often until onion is softened.
4. Drain the can of diced tomatoes, and add.  Cover, and cook on low heat at a simmer for at least 1 hour.  The chili can be cooked longer if desired- just don’t let it dry out too much.
5. Add the fresh diced tomatoes and beans, and cook until heated through.
6. Serve over a couple of Blue tortilla chips, add cheddar cheese if desired.

Makes 3 gallons

Enjoy!

Sacramento Bee's Voter Guide Now Available

The Sacramento Bee has posted their Voter Guide at http://c3.thevoterguide.org/v/sacbee12/.  This handy guide allows you to see which races are in your districts by simply inputting your address and zip code and also allows you to make comparisons of candidates.  A print version of the guide will also be developed.

Primary Election Information: Ballots Being Mailed on May 7.

With the new open primary system in California,  all registered voters, including independents, are free to vote for any candidate for most offices, including the U.S. House of Representatives. The open primary is on June 5th, and vote-by-mail ballots start going out on May 7th.  The top two vote-getters in the primary election will advance to the general election in November.

The new 4th Congressional District encompasses most of Placer county, and extends southward through the eastern halves of Madera and Fresno counties. I am a moderate Democrat from Lincoln running for the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • With the poverty rate in our District at over 30% and unemployment rates at 20% in parts of the District, we need a moderate approach to bring new infrastructure and new job opportunities back to our district.
  • I will work to ensure that the essential effort to reduce our national debt is shared fairly by everyone, and not simply loaded onto the backs of middle income families.
  • I will also work to free small businesses and farmers from constantly changing and conflicting new federal regulations.
  • I will work with local officials to turn local work projects into reality.

With a Ph.D. in Chemistry from MIT, and with a lifelong career as an engineer and manager, I have always been all about getting the job done.

In order to bring our country back to its pre-recession strength, I believe it is essential to invest in the resources that have made our national great: our education system, both college and trade schools; and rebuilding our infrastructure, so that our streets, highways, bridges and utilities are capable of supporting a vibrant, 1growing economy. Those are the kinds of investment that will provide America with a skilled and educated workforce and the jobs needed to maintain our position as a global economic leader.

In these tough times, spending cuts are essential, too. But they must be prudent spending cuts, that will ensure the future viability of our Social Security and Medicare systems critical for maintaining the quality of life for our seniors today and in the future. I would work to reduce the burdensome, and constantly changing, federal regulations that create barriers to prosperity for our business owners and farmers.

Most importantly, I believe that the best ideas come from discussions that include all points of view. The challenges we face are not party specific, and our best solutions will come from gleaning the best ideas from across the political spectrum.

At this critical juncture in our nation’s future, it is essential that we elect a Congressman who will listen to all sides of an issue before acting. I would appreciate your vote.
